5 Hidden Gems You Must Visit in the Andaman Islands

While popular destinations like Havelock Island and Port Blair attract most visitors, there are lesser-known treasures waiting to be explored.

Here, we'll unveil five hidden gems in the Andamans that promise unforgettable experiences for the intrepid traveler.

1. Baratang Island

Nestled between South and Middle Andaman, Baratang Island is a natural wonderland often overlooked by tourists. The island's main attraction is its stunning limestone caves, formed over millennia by the patient work of water and minerals.

To reach Baratang, you'll embark on an adventure in itself. The journey involves a 2-3 hour drive from Port Blair, followed by a short ferry ride. The road passes through the Jarawa Tribal Reserve, offering a rare glimpse into the protected forests of the indigenous Jarawa people.

Remember to respect their privacy and follow all regulations during this part of the trip.

Once on Baratang, a boat ride through dense mangrove creeks leads you to the limestone caves. The play of light and shadow creates an otherworldly atmosphere, making it a photographer's paradise.

Apart from the caves, Baratang is home to mud volcanoes – a rare geological phenomenon. These small, gurgling mounds of mud offer a unique spectacle and are believed to have therapeutic properties by locals.

For nature enthusiasts, the island's mangrove ecosystems are a treasure trove of biodiversity. Keep an eye out for unique flora and fauna, including the vibrant Andaman day gecko and various species of kingfishers.

2. Little Andaman Island

At the southern tip of the Andaman archipelago lies Little Andaman, an island that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. This hidden gem is rapidly gaining recognition among surfing enthusiasts for its excellent waves and uncrowded beaches.

Butler Bay Beach, on the western coast of Little Andaman, is the focal point for surfing activities. You can check out some of the best beaches in the Andaman and Nicobar islands here. The beach offers consistent waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. Several local operators provide surfing lessons and equipment rentals, making it accessible even for those new to the sport.

Beyond surfing, Little Andaman boasts other natural attractions. The White Surf Waterfall, a short trek from the main road, offers a refreshing respite from the tropical heat. The cascading water forms natural pools perfect for a rejuvenating swim.

For wildlife lovers, a visit to the island's turtle nesting grounds is a must. Between December and March, you might witness the awe-inspiring sight of olive ridley turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs.

Accommodation on Little Andaman is limited to basic guesthouses and a few eco-resorts, adding to its charm as an off-the-beaten-path destination. The island's laid-back atmosphere and stunning natural beauty make it an ideal spot for those seeking to escape the crowds and connect with nature.

3. North Button Island

Part of the Rani Jhansi Marine National Park, North Button Island is a tiny, uninhabited island that's a paradise for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts.

While it's not as easily accessible as some other Andaman destinations, the extra effort to get here is richly rewarded. The waters surrounding North Button Island are teeming with marine life. The coral reefs here are some of the most pristine in the Andamans, home to a kaleidoscope of tropical fish, sea turtles, and even the occasional reef shark or manta ray.

Several dive operators in Havelock Island offer day trips to North Button. The journey takes about an hour by speedboat, during which you might spot dolphins playing in the wake. Once there, you'll be treated to multiple dive sites catering to various experience levels.

For those who prefer to stay above water, the island offers excellent snorkeling opportunities close to shore. The shallow reefs are perfect for observing colorful fish and intricate coral formations without the need for scuba gear.

4. Long Island

Long Island, despite its name, is a relatively small island located between South and Middle Andaman. It's a place where time seems to slow down, offering visitors a chance to experience the Andamans at a relaxed pace. The island's main attraction is Lalaji Bay Beach, a secluded stretch of white sand fringed by lush forest. The journey itself is part of the adventure, with opportunities to spot diverse birdlife and perhaps even wild orchids.

Long Island is also known for its extensive mangrove forests.

As you stroll along these paths, keep an eye out for fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and various mangrove species. For history buffs, the island holds an intriguing past. It was once home to a sawmill during the British colonial era, and remnants of this period can still be seen scattered around the island.

Accommodation on Long Island is limited to a few guesthouses and the government-run Blue Planet resort. This lack of extensive tourist infrastructure contributes to the island's unspoiled charm and provides an authentic Andaman experience.

5. Interview Island

Our final hidden gem is Interview Island, a wildlife sanctuary located in North Andaman. This remote island is home to a unique population of feral elephants, descendants of logging elephants abandoned decades ago. The island's dense forests and grasslands provide ideal habitats for various wildlife. Apart from the elephants, you might find spotted deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species. The island's coastline is dotted with pristine beaches, often marked with elephant footprints – a surreal sight for any nature lover.

Guided treks through the forest offer chances to spot these majestic creatures from a safe distance. The island also boasts excellent birdwatching opportunities, with species like the Andaman woodpecker and Andaman drongo frequently sighted. The mangrove ecosystems along the coast are worth exploring, offering glimpses of unique adaptations of plants and animals to this inter-tidal environment.

There are no permanent accommodations on Interview Island, and camping is not allowed due to its protected status. Day trips are the norm, making it a perfect excursion for those based in Mayabunder or Diglipur.
